CHAPTER V

“What would you like to have, Yuki?”

She smiled abruptly and looked at the menu hung on the wall. “A beef ramen, I think?”

Kei nodded. “Okay. You two, the usual?” the two nodded. “Please, wait for fifteen minutes. Thank you.”

“I can’t believe Koyama-san owns this,” she murmured as she roamed her eyes around the place.

“His family does,” Shige added.

She smiled. “Wow. And he also owns the art gallery, right?”

“Yeah, that was his dr–” Shige’s explanation was cut off by someone who just came.

“Uncle, where’s Kei?”

“Inside. He’s preparing ramen for them,” Kei’s father pointed his lip to them.

“Ah, Shige and Tegoshi! What are you guys doing here?”

“Eating, obviously.” Tegoshi answered and laughed. “And you?”

“I was nearby so I decided to visit.” he said and sat beside her.

“Uh, Yuki, that person with no manners is unfortunately our friend. He’s Masuda Takahisa. People call him ‘Massu’. Massu, she’s Yuki, an artist at Kei’s art gallery.”

“Nice meeting you–”

“Massu,” he said, cutting her off.

She smiled. “Massu,”

“Oh, Massu, you’re here. Wait, I’ll go get your usual,”

“Thanks, Kei.” Massu said.

After a few minutes, Kei came back with Massu’s bowl of ramen and they started eating.

“Itadakimasu~~!” they all chorused.

~*~*~*~

“Aaah, I’m so full!” Tegoshi exclaimed.

“Me, too!” Massu agreed while he stretched his arms.

“Yuki, where do you live?”

“Just two blocks away, why?”

Kei shrugged and patted Shige’s shoulder. “Do you mind taking her home? Your way’s there, too, right?”

“Huh? Ah, yeah, sure. How about those two?”

“Massu’s going to stay at Tegoshi’s place. So, he’s going that way, too.” Kei smiled mischivously.

“Me?” Massu pointed himself. “Why would I stay at Tegoshi’s place?”

“Because I asked you,” Tegoshi said, unexpectedly overeager to convince Massu.

“I don’t get it but okay,” he hung his arm around Tegoshi’s shoulder. “Let’s go!”

She and Shige started walking, too. To the other way.

She smiled. During their meal, those four never stopped teasing each other and laughing at one another’s misfortunes. She just met them but she felt like she had known them forever. Maybe because they never let her feel out of place. Especially Shige. Her smile widened. He always made simple ways to insert her into the conversation. He also told her the stories behind their teasings and more.

She felt her heart warmed. She had never felt so welcomed by people she barely know. They were better than her family.

At that thought in mind, her smile faded away. And Shige noticed. She didn’t notice that he had been looking at her all this time.

“What’s wrong? Are you okay?” he asked her with genuine concern.

“Huh?” she absentmindedly faced him. And blushed. “Ah, yeah, I’m fine!”

“Chill, I was just asking,” he said, chuckling.

“What’s funny?”

“Nothing. Was I laughing?” he asked, smiling widely.

“Yes, you’re chuckling. Why?”

“Nothing, I told you.”

“Okay,”

She looked down but she felt his eyes on her. So, she looked at him. And it was too late for him to avert his eyes.

She smiled and stopped walking. “What?”

He shrugged. “Nothing,”

“Nothing yet you keep looking? It’s rude to stare, you know,”

There, under the dim moonlight, she saw him blush, if ever guys were capable of blushing.

“I s-said n-nothing! L-let’s just go!” he stammered.

She giggled silently.
